Yamaoka Pottery Culture Center is a facility where visitors can enjoy pottery making using high-quality clay from Yamaoka Town.
The southwestern area of Yamaoka Town, especially the Hara district, is rich in high-quality refractory clay (frog-eye clay), and its excavation has been conducted since the Edo period. In recent years, mechanization of mining has progressed, and 50,000 tons of clay is produced annually. Taking advantage of this land, the Yamaoka Pottery Culture Center was opened in 1998. The center is staffed by instructors and provides a fulfilling environment for ceramic art classes. In addition, a climbing kiln was opened in 2004, and now many works are fired once a year by members of the class, school children, and students. With a mine in front of the facility, visitors can enjoy pottery making to their heart's content in a rich natural environment.
